Formula Ford Specification

Summary

Formula Ford 1600 cars are single seater open wheeled racing cars. The aim of Formula Ford 1600 is minimise cost, control components and promote close racing where driver skills show through.

Chassis
The chassis is of tubular steel construction. The chassis have sheet metal panels added but these must not be structural. The chassis dimensions are tightly controlled.

Suspension
The suspension can have many differing types of geometry, including Outboard, inboard rocker & inboard push pull rods, however all configurations of suspension geometry are once again tightly controlled by stated dimensions which are often checked.

Bodywork
Bodywork must not contain any exotic materials, for example Carbon Fibre. Aerodynamic aids such as wings are strictly prohibited. In a majority of cases the bodywork is moulded from glass fibre and essentially creates an aerodynamic external profile and encloses the driver, a typical set of bodywork includes a nose cone, top section and 2 side pods.

Wheels & Tyres
Tyres are controlled, only two different tyres are allowed. Firstly the relatively modern AVON ACB10 grooved tyre. This tyre is primarily used by the more modern FF1600. The alternative, which is popular with the older cars, is the AVON ACB9. This treaded tyre looks more contemporary and has a slightly higher profile, however there is little or nothing to choose between them in performance.
Wheels have to be constructed from Steel, and be of controlled dimensions, otherwise they are free.

Engine
The engine is a Ford OHV Kent. This tried and trusted unit produces a maximum of about 110 BHP. The engine components in the main are all standard. Components can be lightened and balanced within tightly controlled limits.

Gearbox
Almost exclusively Formula Ford cars use a 4 speed Hewland racing gearbox transaxle. Classic Formula fords use primarily the MK 8 & 9 boxes. These have no limited slip differentials but all the gear ratios are interchangeable, for different circuits around the country. Typically to race at all the circuits in the UK you would require up to 20 different ratios. The Classic Formula Ford Website contains technical information as well as a gear selection chart for most UK circuits www.classicformulaford.com

Costs
Fact: There is not a cheap form of motor racing! However Classic Formula Ford is the closest you will get. A good car will cost between £5000 - £8000, with running costs of between £3000 - £7000 a year, dependent upon your level of technical knowledge, the spare time you have and the number of races you do.

If you are competing for the first time you will need £1000 for good safety equipment and the costs associated with getting a licence.
